Jay-Z “History”

Still all verklempt with the official announcement that Barack Obama was indeed going to be the 44th President of the United States? After one listen to Jay-Z’s breathtaking new release “History” (from his highly anticipated The Blueprint 3 opus), the emotional floodgates are sure to open at full force all over again.

Atop a throat-knotting synth march helmed by Kanye West, R&B singer Tony Williams croons a triumphant hook: “Now that all the smoke is gone/ And the battle’s finally won/ Victory is finally ours…”. The cut was most likely recorded before Obama’s win, but damn if it it doesn’t perfectly hone in on the wave of over-emotion currently befalling so many.

Reminding folks for the umpteenth time why he ranks among the greats, Jay spews some incredible, metaphor-laced verses on this “I Used To Love H.E.R.”-reminiscent instant classic, tagging “victory” as the special lady he’s spent an entire lifetime in pursuit of (“In search of victory, she keeps it eluding me/ If only we could be together momentarily/ We could make love and make history/ Why won’t you visit me…?”). Throughout his life journey, he admits to spending far too much time shacking up with “a sista (named) ‘Defeat’” and sharing a few flings with ‘Success’ (who’s like “lust/ Which is good for the touch/ Which is good for the moment, but she`s never enough”), but all the while his heart truly panged after that long-sought after “trophy wife”. and when he finally nabs her within his grasp by the song’s climax, their dream union leads to the creation of a baby they name ‘History’ (Awwwwww!!).

Unfolding like the best silver screen tearjerker, “History”‘s soundtracking of one man’s rise to the top magnificently summarizes Jay’s long and winding road to his current top dog throne while simultaneously marking an eventful political achievement that many of us probably never thought would ever actually come to pass. Damn, here comes the tears again…
