Robbers On High Street “Cool It Now (New Edition Cover)”
New Edition’s initial propping as the “80′s Jackson 5″ truly reached it’s peak with their 1984 smash, “Cool It Now”. Featuring Ralph Tresvant’s pre-pubescent chirp experiencing his first heart-fluttering pangs of puppy love, his groupmates’ concerned urging for him to simmer down and a snazzy synth-R&B track (not to mention that classic rap break where he squeaks at his boys to leave him alone and let him feel his feelings), “Cool It Now” hit all the right bubblegum marks and it eventually emerged as the group’s (well-deserved) pop breakthrough thanks to it’s Top 5 Hot 100 placement.
In the hands of grown men (in this cover’s case, NY indie rock act Robbers On High Street), the song’s charms don’t at all fade (it’s not like adults don’t carry entire body-encompassing crushes too!!). Led by the drowsy, nasal tones of frontman Ben Trokan, the Robbers do a fine job maturing the arrangement in a cool, indie chic light, with some tasty bass work re-casting the main groove and falsetto coos imitating New Edition’s youthful harmonies, while Latin percussion and horns bubble with frothy delight in the bridge.
Part of the second volume of Engine Room Recordings’ Guilt By Association compilation which is currently available digitally (peep a streaming of “Cool It Now” amongst several other neat covers of the likes of Toto, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and INXS below); Look for the set’s physical release in February.
