Simian Mobile Disco featuring Beth Ditto “Cruel Intentions”
When the news hit that English electronic duo Simian Mobile Disco‘s second artist release Temporary Pleasure was going to include collaborations with the likes of Jamie Lidell, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and Neon Neon’s Gruff Rhys, you could almost hear hundreds of bloggers going into a joint cardiac arrest. That excitement was only heightened once first single “Audacity of Huge” was unleashed…and given a few repeated listens (Don’t act like it didn’t take you a minute to come around to it’s goofball charms).
Now, thanks to the ways of the Internets, we have been blessed with a prematurely leaked sampling of one of the albums’ more highly anticipated offerings, the Beth Ditto-featured “Cruel Intentions”, and as with most things this indie rock diva is attached to, we adore it immensely.
An extension to the even-more-disco-y route taken on Gossip’s latest album, “Cruel Intentions”, with it’s nagging synth punctuations and slightly midtempo boogie, feels like it’s been time-travelled in from an early 90′s DJ set. Ditto, meanwhile, gives us flashbacks of Robin S. and other soulful belters of that era as she lays bare all of her motives to some potential booty call: “Rest assured I won’t ask for your complete devotion/…You’re not the one I’ll spend my life with”, she reveals, in probably her most contained vocal performance ever.
A surefire winner that accomplishes so much with such minimal dancefloor fanfare, thanks to “Cruel Intentions”, now we really can’t wait to hear what else the guest-star-laden Temporary Pleasure has to offer.
