Jamie Woon “Lady Luck (Acoustic)”/ “Someone Like You (Adele Cover)”

We doubt anyone imagined that British insta-sensation Jamie Woon would follow up his eerily seducing, buzz-sparking introductory single “Night Air” with a single that sounds less like another intriguingly mysterious R&B-dub-pop blend and more like something a freshly post-’Nsync Justin Timberlake would’ve tossed off in a studio with Rodney Jerkins sometime around the turn-of-the-century; yet, despite “Lady Luck”‘s ho-hum ordinariness when put up against “Night”, the song fails to completely rock us off our months-strong “Swoon for Woon” perch, in fact only making us even more anxious to hear what else the newcomer has stewing for us on his upcoming debut full length, Mirrorwriting.

Blame the track’s hypnotizing light R&B bop and Woon’s masterful way with a melody, two elements that burrow into the ear so pleasantly, the fact that the song actually has lyrics, and is not just some groovy wordless lullaby, won’t even register until about the tenth listen, giving you a whole new reason to hit the play button a few more times.

Even more impressive is that Woon would be able to retain “Lady Luck”‘s mesmerizing charm without the aid of the studio version’s twitchy, Y2K urban-pop sonics.

This past weekend, Jamie spun out an acoustic rendition of the song for BBC’s Live Lounge and the amazing performance comes thisclose to besting the studio take to our ears.
