Raekwon featuring Method Man & Raheem DeVaughn “From The Hills”

Sometimes all you need to achieve supreme satisfaction for the day is hearing some new Wu over a nice vintage soul groove.

Never mind that “From The Hills”, a mid-album offering from Raekwon‘s forthcoming fifth set Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, probably won’t even rank in the Top 50 (or hell, Top 100) of a Best Chef Songs Ever list once all is said and done, once those spirited horns burst through the speakers, quickly followed by Raek’s warm-up ad-libs and the piercing falsetto of Raheem DeVaughn singing about “Shaolin” and “fulfilling the prophecy of the Wu-Tang”, it becomes immediately apparent that three minutes of NY street-rap bliss is about to be had, and really, that’s all one could ever ask for.

Here, inspired by the dusty R&B looping beneath him, Raek is taken back in time to his younger hustler days as a “hot mess/ Smoking cheeba, running with stolen speakers” when he stunted all over the schoolyard dressed in nothing but the flyest name-brand gear.

Our sole complaint: that we can’t marinate in his trip down memory lane atop producer Kenny Dope’s lush backing for longer than a single verse.

Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang drops March 8th.
