Three years after filling up many a playlist with the many repeat-worthy gems housed on her 2008 (then-)self-titled debut, idiosyncratic singer/ songwriter/ producer Santigold has finally returned, teasing the release of her long-awaited sophomore album with the premiere of new song “Go” on Jay-Z’s fascinating Life + Times blog this past week.
Co-produced by Santi, alongside Q-Tip & Switch, and featuring Karen O. and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the track finds the singer on guard against those trying to knock her astray. “People want my power/ And they want more station/ Stormed my winter palace, But they couldn’t take it!”, she sings chants in her stinging mezzo-soprano as the track’s blistering, post-punk/ new wave/ dub-blending charge, and Karen O’s contribution of spooky cackles and ethereal coos, sets the scene for the beginnings of a post-apocalyptic World War.
Listening to this early summer anthem for the rebel in all of us, one can’t help but think of Santigold being a great pick for the “Aunty Entity” role (famously handled by Tina Turner previously) if a re-boot of the Mad Max film franchise was to ever come about.
Stream the song below, then snatch up a remix (yes, already!) featuring Theo Martins.
