Chiddy Bang featuring Hockey “Too Much Soul”
Since exploding on the blogosphere with their clever MGMT/ “Kids” re-work “Opposites of Adults” in 2009, Philly duo Chiddy Bang have consistently strengthened their promise in becoming the next major mainstream success to break out from Web fame, their brand of alternative rap, buoyed by Hype Machine-friendly indie-pop samples and an infectious young adult ebullience, coming across perfectly suited for placement alongside the Rihanna’s and Black Eyed Peas’s of the Top 40 playlist world.
Further guaranteeing their future ubiquitousness in the overground world is the group’s latest mixtape Peanut Butter and Swelly, a free.99 fifteen-track set “prequel” to their long-awaited official debut (which is set for a “late 2011″ release) that’s filled to the brim with re-playable hooky goodness for the summer break.
“Too Much Soul” stands out as an immediate favorite, mostly because it graciously extends the life of Hockey’s Rod Stewart-meets-Strokes “Too Fake” as a great hip hop sample source (if you recall, Big Sean’s 2010 collabo with Chiddy, “Too Fake”, also borrowed its hook from the indie rock tune), but also because of it’s serving as a perfect example to the excellent pop chemistry between rapper Chiddy’s energetic flow against producer Xaphoon Jones’ playful sonic textures.
