The Morning Benders “Last Nite”/ Real Estate “Barely Legal” (The Strokes Covers)

It’s been ten years since The Strokes dropped Is This It, provoking hundreds of overzealous writers to begin tagging the five-piece as The Band That Saved Rock in it’s wake while inspiring a countless number of kids to pick up their own instruments and finesse their own super-catchy indie, garage rock and pop blends.

To commemorate the album’s anniversary, the good folks at Stereogum unleashed the tribute cover album event STROKED last week, rounding up several acts from all over the indie sub-genre map to pay their respects to the now-classic release.

Tops for us, and plenty of others, would have to be the morning benders‘ tackling of Is This It‘s utterly perfect “Last Nite”, the Motown-inspired romp that put The Strokes on many listeners’ radars, spawning numerous beloved remakes over the years in wildly diverse styles.

No strangers to pulling off a fantastic cover song themselves, The benders’ keep their remaking reputation intact with a glitchy, ’80s-retro take on the tune that somehow makes the song’s many pop hooks even more infectious with a dash of snazzy Auto-Tune aid and synthified whooshes that turn the cut into this perfect little summertime aural dessert.

Second favorite honors fall on the beautifully dreamy spin on “Barely Legal” by New Jersey indie act Real Estate, who buff the original’s driving, shambolic energy down to a blissfully melodic haze of soft-focused vocals and a soothing, autumnal acoustic arrangement to fashion the best daydreams out of.
