Tokyo Police Club “Under Control (The Strokes Cover)”
Being fans of cover songs in general around these parts, the announcement of Canadian indie-rockers Tokyo Police Club‘s latest project being a freebie series in which they remake ten different songs from the past ten years over ten days of course hit us directly in our sweet spot.
Of the four entries unleashed so far, most have, a tad underwhelmingly, fallen on the side of being just okay (with agreeable, if not out-and-out extraordinary, guitar-drenched takes on Kelly Clarkson’s eternal karaoke classic “Since U Been Gone”, Moby’s semi-forgotten “Southside” [with M83's Morgan Kibby holding down the Gwen Stefani role] and Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness” [featuring Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos]), but a surefire keeper has definitely emerged in their Day #3 offering: a remake of The Strokes’ Room On Fire cut “Under Control” that lobs off the original’s fuzzy indie cool for a cleaner, sunnier handling of the song’s ear-grabbing pop hookery (Love the slight Afro-pop feel!!).
Hear the song below, and keep checking their Soundcloud for further entries.
