J. Cole featuring Missy Elliott “Nobody’s Perfect”
While Missy Elliott is most beloved for her pre-Minaj gabbledygook girl-raps and eye-popping music videos (whether the Hype Williams era or the Dave Meyers run), it’s rarely noted how much of a solid singer she actually is, the buttery-smooth, and teasingly understated, wannabe R&B diva served on tracks like “4 My People”, “All In My Grill”, “One Minute Man” and “Sock It 2 Me”, and appealingly mixed in rap cameos like her standout contribution to Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker (Remix)”, deserving to be credited as some of her finest recording moments.
No question then that we’re excited to hear the vocalist part of Missy’s repertoire get some shine all on it’s own in her “anony-hook-girl” role on J. Cole‘s “Nobody’s Perfect”, a mid-tempo joint that mirrors the stuttering slow jam soul of classic late-’90′s Timbaland, and finds her seductively licking her lips over the rapper (“He like to go inside and/ I love to go all night and/ We rock the boat–Poseidon/ I love to call your name”) as he stews over the female upgrade (from the “Dawana”‘s to the “Rihanna”‘s) he’s experienced since hitting it big.
A nice one, though not as nice as an announcement of a new Missy Elliott album dropping sometime soon…
