Marina and the Diamonds “Radioactive”/ Blood Orange Remix

Marina Diamondis would like the public to embrace her new Marina and the Diamonds‘ single “Radioactive” as some part of an elaborate conceptual piece about a blonde-wigged “non-alter ego” alter-ego named ‘Electra Heart’ and the “corrupt side of American ideologies” and not a one-off go at exploring her more mainstream dance-pop urges, but really, can’t she just say she wanted to see how catering to current radio tastes fit on her, deal with the inevitable “Sellout!!” backlash and keep it moving minus all the unnecessary “deep meaning” justifications (especially considering she wasn’t all that inaccessibly avant-garde before, just another quirky-voiced female singer-songwriter in a sea of many).

Whatever the hell it’s supposed to MEAN, bet that the Stargate-produced “Radioactive”, which basically sounds like a slightly more basic (read: less vocal tics) Marina and the Diamonds tune in club-ready form minus the remixing middle-men, ends up being her biggest single to date, with none of it’s backstory even registering to the millions of listeners using it’s entrancing Euro-cheese synth throb and anthemic hook to support their drunken fist-pumps on through the DJ’s next keyboards-and-thump-based offering.

If nothing else, at least we can thank “Radioactive”‘s existence for helping bring about this remix by Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes, who effortlessly slips into the role of playing Prince to Marina…err, Electra‘s Sheena Easton for a killer slice of subdued dance-pop heaven.
