Drake featuring Lil’ Wayne “The Motto”
With the November 15th release date of Drake’s Take Care looming closer, the rapper has been unleashing preview leaks left and right to strengthen fan anticipation.
After taking things slow with last week’s “Houstatlantavegas” girl R&B shout-out/ “Stevie Wonder”-as-verb establishing “The Real Her” leak, Drizzy takes it back to the club floor with new bonus cut TC sneak peek “The Motto”, his wonderfully carefree stab at the ’00’s West Coast rap’s briefly huge hyphy sound.
Pouring a little drink out to the memory of late Bay Area hip hop icon Mac Dre, Drake reminds us that, all that whining aside, being famous can actually be fun sometimes too, getting his brag on (“I’m the fuckin’ man, y’all don’t get it, do ya?/ Type of money, everybody acting like they knew ya”; “Wrist bling, got a condo up on Biscayne/ Still getting brain from a thang, ain’t shit changed”) over a sparse cycle of handclaps and rubbery 808 throbs.
Special guest star Wayne is the one who delivers “Motto”‘s hottest lyrical fireworks though, running through a number of “Rewind That!” punch-lines (“Almost drowned in her pussy so I swam to her butt”; “Wish a nigga would, like a tree in this bitch/ And if a leaf fall put some weed in that bitch”), actually entertaining hashtags and a “Baby Got Back”/ “Oh–My–God Becky” riff that leaves us wishing he’d bottle the energy, alert-ness and humorous wit he brings to the table here and saves it for every verse on his next album to make the future release the insta-classic set that The Carter IV disappointingly wasn’t.
