Family of the Year “St. Croix”
Yes, the chorus to Family of The Year‘s “St. Croix” features the cringe-inducing lines “You bring the ocean/ I’ll bring the motion/ Together we’ll make a love potion/…Dancing all night in slow motion” and no, it doesn’t deserve an instant trip to the Recycle Bin because of that.
Why? Because the track, a tale of a “boy from Florida” who escapes to the Caribbean to “get over it” from the L.A.-based indie-folk act’s new EP of the same name, so irresistibly evokes the surf n’ sunshine bliss of summer season good times with its happy-go-lucky harmonies, perky “oh-oh-oh-oh”‘s and ’80′s-hazed, tropical-themed dreaminess, not even being stuck with a cornball hook can detract from the record’s feel-good yacht-(indie-)rock charms.
Play this in the middle of a crisp autumn frost, and for the three-and-a-half minutes it oozes through the speakers, you’ll be totally convinced that the outside skies are a clear bright blue.
