Gods’Illa featuring Bahamadia, Monie Love, MC Lyte & Maimouna Youssef “You Don’t Have To Be A Star (Remix)”

DMV-area sibling trio Gods’Illa brought a refreshing dose of both “Grown N’ Sexy” cool and When Hip Hop Was Great feel-good on the original “You Don’t Have To Be A Star”, a cut from their Erykah Badu-hosted CPR BlendTape that married head-nod-approved, soulful boom-bap (based around a sample of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.’s Grammy-winning ’76 No. 1 of the same name) and the sweet, fluttery vocals of singer Maimouna Youssef with mature lyrical spins on the beginning’s, middle’s and end’s of adult relationships that were far more relatable to the masses over the typically lop-sided, misogynist stabs at “romance” usually served in today’s rap.

Taking things a step further on the remix, members Acem, Truth and Powerful hand their mics over to the ladies for a flipside perspective, but they don’t round up any old female emcees here, catching some of the baddest that ever did it by bringing together the legendary MC Lyte, much-respected Bahamadia and, yes, Monie “In The Middle” Love for a delicious meeting of the sexes.
