Sleigh Bells “Comeback Kid”

A month after re-training ears to handle their deafening ear-candy with early Reign of Terror preview, the nothing-but-hooks “Born To Lose”, Sleigh Bells have returned armed with what’s being called the official first single to their upcoming sophomore outing in “Comeback Kid”, another bombastic slab of pummeling beats and heavy riffage surrounding the sweet-as-gumdrops coos of Alexis Krauss who, as usual, seems oblivious to the end-of-days rawk theatrics destroying everything around her.

What’s notable about this one though is the effort being made to better distinguish the group’s patented use of contrasts. Sure, there are still some bits of distortion coming off those jagged guitar lines and thunderous drum claps, but Krauss’ portions (in which she encourages “You gotta try a little harder, you’re the comeback kid” in her best teen-pop chirp) sound a tad more clearer than ever before, which, along with the record’s harder emphasis on the guitar elements and Krauss’ increased involvement in the songwriting process, intriguingly hint of Reign of Terror being more than just a simple Xerox of Treats.

We’re still eagerly awaiting to hear what this new album’s equivalent to “Rill Rill”, their greatest offering yet, will be though…

Snatch up a free download of “Comeback Kid” when you pre-order Terror, due February 21st, on iTunes.
