Zebra Katz featuring Njena Reddd Foxxx “Ima Read”
Re-fashioning a classic diss from the ball culture/ vogue scene into a super-catchy, super-menacing hook threat as a spooky, minimalist thump spends a tense four minutes sounding like it’s about to explode into something big at any second, “Ima Read”, from underground act Zebra Katz (a project born from the mind of performance artist Ojay Morgan and brought forth from Mad Decent’s tastemaking imprint Jeffree’s), emerges as the future-sensation club tune to beat in the forthcoming Spring Break Jam Sweepstakes.
The track, reminiscent of both Azealia Banks current, superstar-making blog-smashes and the darker nightlife anthems Missy Elliott and Timbaland cooked up on 1999′s Da Real World, is just an oddly fascinating beast, Katz and featured guest Njena Reddd Foxxx serving plenty of “bitch”-heavy lyrical earworms as they cut down schoolyard opponents to the nightmarish five-note bass pulse.
“Ima take that bitch to college/ Ima give that bitch some knowledge,” hilariously drones Zebra (“Fucking”) Katz, though it’s the “chop”/ “slice”/ “dice”/ “ice” promises of the deliciously nasty “class president” Foxxx that takes the cake here, her bully-ish “I called you a slut/ What you gon’ do bitch?” and “It’s gon’ be cohesive/ It’s gon’ be my thesis/ Ima read that bitch/ I’m that bitch” dagger jabs dripping with a hypnotic feistiness that leaves us begging to hear more from her.
