Chiddy Bang “Marvin & Chardonnay (Big Sean Cover)”/ “By Your Side”
After a lengthy wait, the release date of Chiddy Bang‘s much-delayed debut full-length Breakfast has finally reached around-the-corner status (it drops February 21st in the U.S. [pre-order it here or here], everywhere else March 5th), so it only makes sense that the alt-hip hop duo have already begun making promotional stops with today finding them in BBC’s 1Xtra Live Lounge studios where they performed current single “Ray Charles” and, as their cover pick (our favorite part), opted on taking on Big Sean’s Summer of ’11 jam “Marvin & Chardonnay”.
And since a rap act doing a straight-forward rendition of another rap act’s song is generally seen as a no-no (unless your paying tribute to icons at VH1′s Hip Hop Honors or something), we get “MG&C” served with a Chiddy twist, resulting in a pretty fabulous beat overhaul that leans space-y starry-eyed on the intro before morphing into a slick, chunky synth-dominated electro-G-funk groove, and Chiddy setting his own “freaky-time” mood with “two girls” and “one cup” (heh), a video camera and some Marvin paired with Clicquot.
Our only complaint? That this jam isn’t way longer than it is, even if the extra minute was solely spent giving us a little more time with those seductive synth lines.
Hear the cut below (via), then check out Chiddy Bang’s newly released video for surprising non-Breakfast cut “By Your Side”, a hip hop Valentine-themed number that would make for a solid official single on its own, making us really wonder what hit-plated material Breakfast will be consisting of.
