R. Kelly “Share My Love”
Part of the fun in R. Kelly announcing a brand new album is trying to figure out which one of his many sounds the new collection will be revolved around.
Will we be getting sexy groove 12 Play Kellz, retro-focused Love Letter Robert, soap opera drama “Trapped In The Closet” R. or the hip hop-informed XXX goofball Pied Piper that gave us the remixes to “Ignition” and “I’m A Flirt”?
“Share My Love” is the first single from the forthcoming Write Me Back (Rob’s fourteenth [!!] studio effort, counting collaborative projects with Public Announcement and Jay-Z) and it finds the soul crooner in his winning steppers’ anthem lane, continuing the beloved-by-all-ages vibe set by “Step In The Name of Love” and “Happy People” with another disco-fied celebration of romance for you, your parents and your grandparents to shake a tail feather to come summertime BBQ picnic time.
“Now that you’re in this room/ Let’s do what we were born to do…populate,” croons Kelly, but that’s about as risque as he gets here, more focused here on draping your ears with a feel-good warmth that blends vocals that hearken back to the lover-man charm of Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Lou Rawls with the kind of lush, strings-laced disco arrangement that Barry White and his Love Unlimited Orchestra crew regularly gifted audiences with back in the day.
After trying to wrap our brains around the tragic news of Don Cornelius’ passing today, the first day of Black History Month ’12 needed this uplifting number.
