As if to show nameless super-group of dudes Gorillaz/ Andre 3000/ James Murphy from last week’s premiered “DoYaThing” that girls can do their “thing” just as funk-tastically, Estelle and Janelle Monae have hooked up for a fun lil’ retro-baked jingle edu-taining the benefits of being an individual.
Found on Estelle’s freshly-unleashed (and really good!) All of Me, her long-awaited (and, what, four or five singles deep now?) follow-up to 2008’s “American Boy”-birthing Shine, “Do My Thing” jives to a handclap-laden, 60’s pop organ shuffle as Estelle and Monae sassily explore what “girl power” means in 2012, namely that “I (wear my clothes, wear my hair, walk around) like this” because, well, “I can”.
Estelle, who has previously shone a fancy to sing and rap over a number of different styles with usually fantastic results, definitely rocks her parts, but it’s hard to ignore how much “Thing”‘s giddy, eccentric soul-pop groove fits Monae like a glove, the alt-R&B diva not only pulling off the song’s best line (“When I dance I dance to the beat of a drummer you don’t hear and you can’t see/ So if I look offbeat to you, well the problem must be you, not me”) but leaving us desperately in need for her to drop another album like now.
