Kelis’ Neptunes-produced 1999 debut Kaleidoscope may mostly be known for spawning her breakout smash “Caught Out There” and the Top 20 UK hit “Good Stuff”, but there was so much more alt-urban goodness to be found on that still-stunning introductory set, namely the album’s third single, the less commercially successful and wildly underrated gem “Get Along With You”.
Fast-forward a decade-plus later and the dark ballad is given a second shot at pop cultural impact with this crazy-good ‘re-fix’ by London-born one-to-watch MNEK.
Painting the song over with a snazzy synth-R&B groove and a soulfully mature vocal stamp that truly digs into the heart-ached desperation of the song’s confessional lyric while (WARNING: Your mind is about to be blown!) belying the singer-songwriter-producer newcomer’s SEVENTEEN YEARS OF AGE (!??!?!!?), MNEK’s cover (nicely tricked out with vocal snippets from Kelis) both guarantees multiple repeat spins and leaves us with the deep-rooted feeling that his name and talent isn’t going to be enjoying space “under-the-radar” for too much longer.
