A minute or so into Rye Rye‘s latest single “Boom Boom” one can’t help but already feel the onslaught of comparisons to hit the ‘Net involving another colorful female rappa-sometimes-sanga with a POP!!-ular single that also features the word “Boom”, but really…let’s not act like B-more-born Rye Rye hasn’t held a certain appreciation for radio-ready hooks and fizzier-than-fizzy sonics from the beginning (not to mention the oft-ignored idea that the world doesn’t have to come to an end if more than one lady rapper is successful at a time).
Back to “Boom Boom” though, an exciting entry not only for the fact that it arrives with the news of Rye’s much-pushed-back debut Go! Pop! Bang! having a new release date set for March (let’s pray it sticks!), but also because the cut is just an irresistibly catchy ditty tailor-made for Summertime of ’12 blasting.
Making it even more of a new guilty pleasure, how a song that seems to be all fun, teeny-bop spunk on the surface (with its bubblegummy 8-bit bounce, references to video game systems and Rye Rye longing to be the “Daisy” to some dude’s “Donald”) sneakily reveals itself to be about more than innocent, heart-as-pupils puppy love with a less-than-casual listen.
“Boom boom boom/ I want you in my room,” Rye coos on the Vengaboys-inspired hook, later suggesting the couple watch some porn to spark up an all-night marathon sex session. Homegirl is trying to get her back broke here, and right now, we seriously wouldn’t mind hearing her attempt at accomplishing this goal over and over well into the next year.
Single drops March 5th.
