Dom Kennedy featuring Rick Ross & Aaliyah “Gold Alpinas”
With its steady supply of relaxed, conversational flowage painting a jealousy-baiting big baller lifestyle and chilled-out soundscapes built from old waterlogged R&B cassette tape samples and ’90’s G-funk inspiration, West Coast indie rap fave Dom Kennedy‘s latest mixtape release Yellow Album makes a strong bid in becoming one of Summer 2012’s top hip hop go-to’s; standing out among the thirteen featured slabs of laidback, Cali rap feel-good: mid-set entry “Gold Alpinas”, which not only boasts a Rick Ross cameo, but is made extra special by producer DrewByrd‘s sweet Aaliyah loop.
Sample-based references to the late great R&B princess’ gold mine of a catalog have been popping up more and more in underground-ish genre forms (and, well, Drake), but, surprisingly, few modern day musical nods of appreciation have extended towards her 1996 masterpiece One In A Million, arguably one of the most groundbreaking black pop releases to emerge in the past quarter century.
DrewByrd re-reminds of the deathless potency of Timbaland and Aaliyah’s late ’90’s studio chemistry with the bite-sized riff off Million album cut “Never Comin’ Back” he cooks up for “Alpinas”, the revolving snippet’s seductive swirl of Tim’s sultry funk and Baby Girl’s cooler-than-cool ad-lib vocal underlining Kennedy and Ross’ slick-toothed braggadocio tag-team with just the right amount of swaggy smoove.
