Hit-Boy “Selfish (Freestyle)”

On the heels of the release of his debut rap solo project, the well-received mixtape HITstory, Hit-Boy continues to map out his smooth trek from smash-making producer to respectable emcee on this latest offering, a freestyle over Slum Village’s highest charting single, 2004′s Aretha-sampling “Selfish”.

Considering all the Yeezy comparisons that have met Hit-Boy in the wake of his turn to the mic, attaching himself to a track Kanye memorably produced and rhymed on might not seem like the smartest distinguishing move, but a very self-aware HB (“Rappin’ over my own shit/ They say I’m ‘Ye times two”) couldn’t care less, more interested in further flexing his better-than-average rapping chops in a two-minute-long single verse that engages in some mildly clever wordplay (“They say I don’t ad-lib enough/ But I do stack chips enough/ So yeah, give me my Pringles and all of my Doritos/ I’m a rapper now, I guess I’ll rhyme the shit with Frito [free-throw]}” and assures that his newly established buzz as an artist beyond the beat-making likely won’t be dying down anytime soon.
