CHVRCHES “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay (Whitney Houston Cover)”
Their heretofore catalog highlighted by a few attention-grabbing remixes for names like MS MR and St. Lucia, a fantastic cover of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” and a few Internet-beloved ditties making the most out of ’80’s-indebted keyboard dazzle and brain-invading choruses brought to life by Lauren Mayberry’s distinctive faerie-doll coos, Glasgow, Scotland-birthed synth-pop machine CHVRCHES have made an impressively quick rise up the blog-buzz ranks in their brief two years of existence, and with their long-anticipated full-length debut The Bones of What You Believe finally arriving this past week blanketed in a swarm of rave, best-of-year reviews, the air of excitement bubbling around them doesn’t look like it’ll be going anywhere anytime soon.
If that album’s release didn’t already make this the best week ever to be a CHVRCHES fan though, the trio gave their followers an extra special treat when, during their BBC Radio/ Maida Vale gig yesterday, they paid tribute to one of their idols with this awesome live cover of the late, great Whitney Houston’s cheater-dismissing late ’90’s hit “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay”.
Their rendition may lack the neck-popping sass that made the Houston take so deliciously diva-camp, but everything else here is pretty on point, from a sonic foundation that recasts the original’s futuristic R&B pulse with gorgeously icy layers of trap-meets-chillwave, to the funky talk-box elements that peek out on the fringes, to Mayberry’s prepubescent delivery bringing new depth to the heart-aching devastation that lingers beneath the lyric’s daytime talk show drama.
