In which Jamie Foxx takes the perfectly fine as-is Intuition highlight “Digital Girl” and gives it a needless re-scrubbing, bringing in an entirely different beat, brand new lyrics and a ho-hum guest appearance from Drake.
Dubbed the “West Coast Remix” (or, in some corners of the Web, the “MJ Remix”), we can appreciate it’s BBQ-in-the-park ’90′s R&B Cali groove and Jamie’s R-rated King of Pop shout-out (“I wanna ‘beat it’/ (Like Michael)/ Cause you ‘Bad’ (Like Michael)/ ‘Billie Jean’ it (Like Michael)/ Make you ‘Scream’ It (Like Michael)”), but ultimately this “Digital Girl” 2.0 pales in comparison to the spaced-out digi-soul of the album version.
To Foxx’ people: it’s completely understandable why you might want to rush deliver this one to the necessary outlets first (Drake + MJ tribute + slight summer jam appeal = major urban airwave spins for the moment), but if we don’t get a video and a proper radio push of the far superior original (followed by a single release of Intuition‘s other solid jam, the Timbaland-blessed “I Don’t Need It”), we’re gonna have a problem.
Here’s a couple random goodies that have pierced the Maestro’s eardrums in a good way recently:
First up, the great DJ Ted Smooth gives Lady GaGa’s breakout smash “Just Dance” a nice hip hop tone, throwing in those beloved skittering drum patterns from Jay Z’s “Jigga What, Jigga Who”and a Busta Rhymes verse (“I’m back on my bullshit so much/ My bowel movement’s fucked up”) as backup to GaGa’s drunken exclamations (still love the WTF randomness of that “Where are my keys?/ I lost my phone” line).
Next, from the fingertips of DJ Fabian, comes a summer-ready blend of Jamie Foxx’ deathless “Blame It” atop the always-BBQ-friendly grooves of Arrested Development’s “Everyday People”.
Thank you Fabian, for being all too aware that you can never go wrong with a lil’ 90′s throwback vibe.
A futuro R&B-disco bump forms the delectable base of “Digital Girl”, a “Keith Sweat for the Internet Age”-styled sex jam collabo between Jamie Foxx, Kanye West and The-Dream that finds the boys foaming at the mouth while ogling over and conversing with buxom babes via the aid of the latest technology.
Armed with his trusty iMac MacBook Air (wink wink, BNW) and a newfound respect for the i-chat, West spearheads this celebration of the “new form of mackin’”, sending off naughty pics of himself that lead to receiving womens’ jaw-dropped reactions and impromptu stutterings of T-Pain jams (“I-i can’t believe it…”). Meanwhile, a wispy-voiced Jamie weaves in and out of the track’s sharp, hand-clap strut and spacey keyboard washes, following every seductive slow tease move his girl makes across his laptop screen. “I love it girl/ The way your lips look after you apply the gloss,” he exhales, longing for the day he can snatch her up in person and freak her down in his kitchen (!?!).
After listening to this fire, you just know that somewhere right now, R. Kelly is holed up in some studio cooking up a semi-clever-but-mostly-gross, FaceBook-referencing verse for his own personal remix.
Jamie Foxx’ new album, Intuition, drops December 16th.
As nice as it is to get free music, think of how much better your soul would feel if you purchased it the old-fashioned way.
