jj “CEO Birthday” (Semi-Jeremih Cover)”

April 25th, 2010 No comments

Mysterious Swedish indie-pop entity jj aren’t above tapping into the urban music pool for a little inspiration (previous entries have borrowed hooks, verses and musical signatures from the catalogues of Akon, Lil’ Wayne and The Game), so it doesn’t really come as too much of a surprise that their newest cryptic creation, “CEO Birthday”, would lift melodic and lyrical content from Jeremih’s 2009 debut smash “Birthday Sex”.

The track is no less of a head-scratching marvel though, heightening the drowsy, lullabye undertones of “Birthday Sex” through singer Elin Kastlander’s gentle, ethereal coos and an extended downbeat instrumental section that brings to mind the chilled erotica of Art of Noise’s avant-garde bedroom staple “Moments In Love”.

Jeremih featuring R. Kelly “Birthday Sex (DJ Skee Mix)”

r-kelly1It was only a matter of time before the suddenly on-the-verge-of-ubiquity again R. Kelly would attach himself to “Birthday Sex”. The recently chart-topping Jeremih bedroom jam felt like a second-rate Kells number from the get-go, so it comes as no surprise that the tune would be touched upon for the upcoming R. Kelly/ DJ Skee/ DJ Drama mixtape collaboration The Demo Tape.

Unfortunately, this remix doesn’t really gift us with the over-the-top raunch we were praying for (proving our long-held fears that Kells really has run out of the outlandish XXX-rated ideas we’ve admired from him for so long), but it’s ultimately more satisfying than Demo‘s previous drop, a somewhat meh remix of Drake’s “Best I Ever Had”, managing to keep us mildly amused with Robert’s immediate dismissal of his girl’s galpal (aka: “That bitch on defense”) and laughing off of tried-and-true ‘birthday sex’ tactics (he doesn’t do jumping out of cakes!!).

Jeremih featuring Fabolous “Birthday Sex (Remix)”

jeremihWhat’s the hottest R&B sex jam of the moment? Well, that honor would probably have to fall on “Birthday Sex” by Chicago newcomer Jeremih.

It may not be the most original of it’s ilk-R. Kelly, T-Pain or The-Dream could have all tossed this one out in their sleep, and with better, more-outlandish XXX metaphors than “Girl without a broom I might just sweep you off yo feet/ And make you wanna tell somebody how I do”-but the combination of that sensual groove with it’s titular gift theme has enough going for it to get the mood started.

Of course, some horny-minded rapper would have to bless the remix, and while this would probably be the perfect opportunity for another raunchy Ludacris cameo, it’s Fabolous who jumps on board first, kicking off this 2.0 take with a mean-spirited (but kind-of cool) joke we wouldn’t dare say to any girlfriend (“My shorty called me like ‘You know what’s bout to come-come-come-come’/ I said ‘Your friend, shit, lemme come get some-some-some-some’”) as well as lines about “pussy reservations” and, in what’s disappointingly the lone B.J. reference offered here, the “blow”-ing out of “candles”.
