Wale featuring Weensey, Chris Brown & Fabolous “Pretty Girls (Remix)”

April 15th, 2010 No comments

Though having names like Wale and Gucci Mane attached damn near guaranteed Attention Deficit‘s latest (but should have been first) single “Pretty Girls” would draw audiences in large waves, anyone who has been charmed by this record and given it umpteen re-spins since it’s leak-premiere last Summer knows it’s not the rappers that keep them coming back for more.

No, that honor would have to go to hook-wailer Weensey (singer of the long-running DC-area go-go act the Backyard Band) and the room-filling gloriousness of his edge-of-range croaks awe-struck by the lovely ladies surrounding him.

Sadly, this newest remix doesn’t allow Weensey a larger role, but it does feature Wale offering a new verse, as well as guest appearances from Chris Brown (still trying his best to win back public favor) and Fabolous, who’s always good for a semi-clever misogynist jewel or two (“Like a hooker in the winter/ Them hos’ cold”).

The White Panda “Tipsy In The Sun (Weezer vs. J-Kwon Mash-Up)”

There’s no better way to kick off the beginnings of better weather (and the arrival of spring break!!!!) than to have the good-times guitar strummings of Weezer’s “Island In The Sun” expertly merged with the locker-door slams and debaucherous dialogue of J-Kwon’s 2004 lone hit, “Tipsy”.

When listening to this excellent mash-up, the latest great achievement from the The White Panda crew, you can damn near hear jumbo sized sleeves of red plastic cups being ripped into all across the country.

…And, just to keep this whole “Island”-meets-hip hop vibe going, enjoy D.C./ Maryland/ Virginia-based quartet The Five One‘s 2009 music blog-circuit fave “L.A. Girl”, which uses the same Weezer track (as well as lyrics…ahem, borrowed from Kanye West’s “Robocop”) as foundation for a tribute to spoiled lil’ Cali babes.

Currently featured, amongst a few other great remixes/ cover songs, on The Five One’s newest mixtape, Road To SXSW.

Wale featuring Lady Gaga “Chillin’ (Skratch Bastid Remix)”

chillin (skratch bastid remix)True, after loving Wale‘s previous two mixtape triumphs, 2007′s 100 Miles & Running and the Seinfeld-themed, year-later follow-up The Mixtape About Nothing, the comparably bland lyrical input on his official major label debut, “Chillin” (not to mention the questionable choice of Lady GaGa as hook feature), kind-of deserved the underwhelmed reaction it initially received.

But after a few listens, and a coming-to-terms with the idea that this was meant to be rapper’s introduction to the less Web-affixed masses, “Chillin’” didn’t seem so bad; plus, it was hard to deny the song’s oddly tantalizing hip-pop mixture of Wale’s “Top Billin”‘ swag-jack, GaGa’s shameless M.I.A-biting and Cool & Dre’s lively production (winner of best use of a Steam sample in a year that’s saw the already overly-familiar “Na Na Na Na” tune become even more ubiquitious).

Previously MM-hyped DJ/ remixer/ producer Skratch Bastid helps elevates “Chillin’”‘s level of appeal much further with a mega-sized-feeling revamp that cleverly interweaves nods to Wale’s D.C. birthplace (via it’s licking of Trouble Funk’s go-go classic “Let’s Get Small”) amongst other blink-and-you-miss-them snippets, ranging from “I Put A Spell On You” to “Paper Planes” to “Arab Money”, all inspired by select lines.

Look for Bastid’s new 110% mix CD to drop real soon, and try to catch him on his tour throughout Canada sometime this summer (see dates here). As for Wale, his long-awaited AllIDo/ Interscope debut, Attention: Deficit, is due sometime later this year.
